Sea of Thieves Crashing on PC Fix

Sea of Thieves was a really promising title when it came out in March 2018. Despite its obvious appeal and hype from the developer, Rare, and publisher, Microsoft Studios, the game didn’t live up to the hype. The repetitive PVE content and a plethora of bugs scared the weak hearted away leaving a closely knit bunch of hardcore buccaneers to plunder and pillage its virtual seas.

The biggest bug you will have to contend with is the Sea of Thieves crashing problem. In most cases, the game will crash on the loading screen or during sign in. At other times, the crashing seems random. We have come up with a couple of solutions to help you get over the crashing no error problem.

Update Your Graphics Card Drivers

Updating your graphics card drivers should always be your first solution to any game crash. If Sea of Thieves is crashing on startup, chances are there is a conflict between the game’s operation and your current drivers.sea of thieves crashes

People running on AMD graphics cards can definitely benefit from this move since the graphics card manufacturer pushed out a driver version, Radeon Software Adrenalin 18.5.2 with the specific intent of plugging bugs that made Sea of Thieves crash or hang after the very first splash screen.

Part of the Game Missing Access to the WindowsApps Folder

Windows apps use the WindowsApps folder to store the temporary data they need to run. If your game is launching but crashing during gameplay or crashing at sea, then this fix will work for you.

  • Open File Explorer
  • Browse to “C:\Program Files”
  • Right click on “WindowsApps” and select properties
  • Select the “Security” tab
  • Click the “Advanced” button
  • Click the “Permissions” button
  • Click the Add button
  • Click “Select a principal” link
  • Click the locations button and select the local computer
  • Add the “ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES” (No quotes) group name and click ok
  • Then make sure that profile has all permissions and click ok.

Pro Tip: If the Add permissions button is greyed out, then your need to take ownership of the folder first. If you can’t see the folder, ensure that you have enabled show hidden files options.

If Sea of Thieves still keeps on crashing, you can try this final fix.

  • Install the latest Windows updates
  • Ensure that you are signed into Microsoft Store using the email account you used to purchase the game.
  • Download any free app, install and launch it before trying Sea of Thieves
  • If this doesn’t work, open the PowerShell and run the following command

Get-AppXPackage | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}
