Binding of Isaac Afterbirth Challenges: How to Unlock & Play Them
Binding of Isaac games would never be the same without the Challenges. In my opinion, challenges are a great way to add some demanding sections to a game that is otherwise easy and fun to play. The Binding of Isaac Afterbirth challenges are a great quest for hardcore gamers who not only want the satisfaction but also add hidden content that makes the game quite replayable.
Most of the Binding of Isaac Afterbirth challenges are not mandatory when struggling to finish the general storyline. However, in Isaac titles, challenges have been the only way to unlock Rune pick-up items. You can choose your challenges in the main menu.
Here are then 10 additional Binding of Isaac Afterbirth challenges you should fix your eyes on when playing the game. Remember that each challenge is unlocked once you do something in the game and finishing a challenge gives you a unique reward.
1. XXXXXXXXL Challenge
You can unlock this challenge by killing Mom for the very first time. In the challenge, all floors are in the size of an XL Womb floor. This, however, does not combine floors for each game chapter.
Complete this challenge and you will earn the Gold Heart reward.
2. SPEED! Challenge
You can unlock this challenge by killing Mom for the very first time. Once you start the challenge, everything will speed up and you have exactly 16 minutes to beat Mom’s heart. If you are successful, you will be rewarded with the Get Out Of Jail Free Card.
3. Blue Bomber Challenge
In this Binding of Isaac Afterbirth challenge, you won’t be able to shoot tears at all. Your starting items are Kamikaze!, Mr. Mega, Pyromaniac and Brother Bobby. Use these wisely and you will make your way to the very end. You will want to save your Kamikaze! Cards for the very end and bomb your way through the game instead.
Your reward will be Gold Bomb Pickup.
4. Pay to Play
To unlock this challenge, you will have to unlock Sack of Pennies and It Lives. After that, start with 50 cents and a Sack of Pennies. You won’t find any treasure rooms with this run and each door you encounter will cost you 1 coin to enter. You will drop money when damaged and will eventually die off when you run out of money/coins.
If your sack of money holds to the very end, you will be rewarded with 2 new pills; Addicted! and Percs!
You can play custom challenges that weren’t part of the original game. Check this video for an idea of what these are all about
5. Have a Heart
This challenge unlocks when you kill Mom for the first time. To play, you will have to start with Charm of the Vampire, 12 red heart containers (with one filled) and red hearts. Be keen not to drop the red hearts as you cannot replenish along the way and your only alternative would be the Charm of the Vampire.
You will get 2 new pills upon finishing this challenge
6. I Rule! Challenge
To unlock this challenge, you will have to kill the Lamb for the first time and unlock Mom’s knife. To start the quest, get Trinity Shield, The Ladder, Mom’s Knife, Key Piece 1, Key Piece 2 and the Boomerang. There are no treasure rooms in this run and your goal is to find and beat Mega Satan using your arsenal.
If you are successful, you will be rewarded with Poker Chip.
You will unlock this challenge by unlocking the Polaroid. Once you are ready to undertake the challenge, pack Thunder Thighs, The Poop and 3 Bob’s Brains. In the mission, you cannot shoot tears. The only way to damage enemies is by using Bob’s brains and bombs. You won’t gather anything along the way as there are no Treasure rooms.
Upon completion, you will be rewarded with the Stud Finder.
8. Pride Day! Challenge
You will unlock this challenge by killing Mom for the first time. To succeed, you will have to start with 3 Dollar Bill, Rainbow Worm and Rainbow Baby. There won’t be any treasure rooms hence you can’t find anything in this run and have to use what you carry to survive.
Succeeding will see you rewarded with D8.

10. The Guardian Challenge
You will unlock this challenge by Killing mom for the very first time. To start the quest, equip Holy Grail, Punching Bag, Isaac’s Heart and the Spear of Destiny. The Isaac’s Heart follows the Punching Bag instead of the player hence you will have to protect it at all times. You cannot fire tears and won’t discover any Treasure Rooms in this run.
The reward at the very end would be Blank Rune
If you already have Cheat Engine or any other Binding of Isaac Afterbirth cheats in place, you can use them to make your mission more possible. The only problem is you won’t really feel the satisfaction of having achieved the related trophies the hard way.
